“The complicated road to simplicity”
This quote, painted on a small wooden sign, was a gift to the studio from Matt and Janet Stern when they completed their eight-year quest for a home.
The couple sold a 6500-square foot historic mansion in which they had raised their family and opted to improve a small simple existing property. The Sterns wanted a place that would reflect their commitment to the environment and sustainable building practices. They wanted a well-insulated, low maintenance home that would allow them to age in place. A major requirement was to have light and airy rooms with high ceilings. As these conditions are seldom found in the historic homes within desired walking distance to shops and the market, a compact addition was built to meet all their wishes. The existing home was melded seamlessly into the addition.
